Simple Travel

Semana Santa in Antigua is an incredibly beautiful but totally bonkers week full of tourists. So, for the first time ever, we put our house up on Air BnB and got out of dodge.

We packed the car to the gills, wedged the kids into their car seats, and headed towards our cacao farm in Rio Dulce on the Caribbean coast of Guatemala. We proceeded to have a 10 day adventure in which we threw caution to the wind, fudged schedules, and lived as carefree as possible. Because, why not? If there is one thing that comes with being a parent, it’s the tendency to stick to what works and what is comfortable…but sometimes it is so healthy and liberating to just mix it up. Sometimes, surprisingly, it’s not the chaos that we anticipate when we let go of routines.

There were boat rides, rope swings, farm visits, and lots of swimming.

Nights and days were spent working, playing, and resting in our little jungle casita.

And every moment was an opportunity for a Luna*Zorro photo shoot.

Vacations don’t have to be extravagant to be memorable whether you’re a parent or not. We saved money by renting our house out (which took off a huge financial weight), we packed snacks and took advantage of the natural surroundings to entertain us.

Sometimes the least complicated plans are the best plans, and by allowing myself to relax into the unstructured adventure I was able to live in the moment of an unforgettable week with my little tribe. By letting go just a tiny bit, I rediscovered a playful, youthful part of myself that I am always so happy to hang out with.

Give it a try and mix up your schedule, even if it’s just a little trip around the park during your lunch break. I think you’ll be happy you did.
